Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in the central nervous system (CNS) where chronic inflammation triggers and promotes neuro-axonal degeneration. A majority of patients are diagnosed at the age of 20 to 40 and it is one of the most common causes of disability in young adults. The cause of the disease is unknown, but considerable evidence indicates that the interplay between genetic background and environmental factors play an important role. Blocking acute inflammation using disease modifying drugs and symptom-relieving treatments are current strategies used in clinical practice, but there is no cure for MS at present, warranting further investigation and identifying new targets.
